Jingqian Zhou (@zhou.jingqian) is an emerging screenwriter, director, producer, and artist. At the age of 21, she founded her own film company and worked mainly as the producer of the company. Zhou says that it was a difficult time in her life. In 2015, she moved to Paris to study film making. After that, she began shooting advertisements, music videos, and films.
In her unique short film, The Origin, she portrays a new world in which all things merge into one. She says, “it is an imaginary ideal space of freedom.” It is a space where there are no races, definitions, and restrictions of our current world, where everything is free and equal. She adds: “The creatures that exist there are genderless and have unlimited bodies that integrate the characteristics of human, animal, plant, matter, and soul.
She explains the synopsis of this film with a term called the original conceptual body. We were curious about this term and had a chance to discuss its meaning further. It means the creatures in the film existing beyond our constructed minds’ boundaries can reproduce by themselves and satisfy their own needs.
We can also see some of her films documenting the characters’ behavior in her movies while also having a specific plot. Zhou’s creative inspiration comes from life. “I write the script and storyboard before shooting, but I also improvise while shooting,” said she during our conversation.
